Palawan

Palawan

What can you say about Palawan that has not already been said 100 times or more? Regularly voted the most beautiful island in the world, this may perhaps change as more and more tourists discover the best and brightest gem in the “Pearl of Orient” as the Philippines are sometimes known.

Getting to Palawan is pretty straightforward, with regular flights from Manila to Puerto Princesa. There are less regular flights to El Nido, but our advice is to fly into Puerto Princesa. The chances are that once you see El Nido, you will never want to leave.

If nothing else, you will want to visit the Puerto Princesa Underground River, which technically is nearer to Sabang than PP. It is one of the longest underground rivers in the world, although I have  seen it described as “just a cave with a lot of stalagmites and stalactites!” And it has a lot of bats. It is, however, a Unesco World Heritage site

You will also want to stop off at Sabang beach. It may be “just a stretch of sand” and some trees next to the sea” for some, but most people will agree that it rivals the beaches at Coron and El Nido.

The highlight of Palawan though is unquestionably Coron and El Nido. Perfect beaches, clear seas, and a buzzing atmosphere. The diving here, particularly in Coron is considered to be top rate, with barracudas cruising through old shipwrecks.

The town of El Nido is the starting point for exploring the Bacuit Archipelago, and has a vibrant hotel and bar scene. For that reason, some travellers will choose to move a little further away. El Nido is Spanish for “Nest” and the town is given its name through the swifts who build their nests in the limestone cliffs around the town.
